The West African Power Pool (WAPP) says it is working towards ensuring adequate and affordable power supply in West African.

Mr Usman Mohammed, the Chairman, Executive Board of WAPP made this known at a three day Joint Technical Working Group Meeting for Synchronisation project on Monday in Abuja.

Mohammed who is also the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said it became imperative to synchronize power to ensure energy interconnection flow in West Africa countries.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that synchronization of power is a unified regional electricity market aimed at addressing the energy needs of ECOWAS citizens by providing medium and long-term regular and reliable energy at competitive cost.

The ECOWAS Regional Electricity Market was launched in June to ensure the realization of the mandate given to WAPP by the authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.

The mandate was given almost two decades ago. WAPP was also mandated to establish a mechanism and institutional framework to integrate the national power systems of ECOWAS member states.

According to Mohammed, there is need to ensure that WAPP interconnected power system currently being operated as three synchronous bocks are successfully synchronized and operated reliably.

“I am hopeful and confident that the technical working groups will work assiduously to ensure that the recommendations from the synchronization study are implemented in a timely manner,” he said.

Earlier, Mr KI Siengui, the Secretary General, WAPP said the technical working groups of WAPP were established to serve as backbone of technical coordination and to support the implementation of the synchronization recommendations.

Siengui, represented by Mr Abdulkadir Nazif, the Director, WAPP Information and Coordination Centre, urged the working group to review and discuss the level of implementation of the prerequisites and conditions precedent recommended by the synchronization study.

He urged them to update the Action Plan for the synchronization project and among others.(NAN)
