SMW - Damilola Solesi

Damilola Solesi, the Chief Executive Officer, Smids Animation Studios, on Friday urged more women to key into animation, describing it as the next revenue-generating industry and “a gold mine” in years to come.

Solesi made the appeal at the ongoing 2019 Social Media Week (SMW) in Lagos on Friday, while discussing the topic: “Women in Animation’’.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that animation is defined as a method in which pictures are manipulated to appear as moving images.

In traditional animation, images are drawn or painted by hand on transparent celluloid sheets to be photographed and exhibited on film.

The topic centres on the successes and struggles of women in the Nigerian animation industry, as well as the vital role which women have to play in a developing industry.

Solesi said that although the industry was still in its infancy but in years to come, it would become a part of Nollywood industry where billions of Naira would be generated.

Solesi said that one of the major challenges faced by the animation space was the issue of funding.

“It is still hard to convince investors to finance the animation sector, if the industry can scale through this hurdle, it will be the next sector generating money for the country,’’ she said.

Solesi said that aside funding challenges, the animation industry would be a gold mine if they had government support and investors who believed in the project.

She said that the animation industry gave experts in the field the opportunity to tell African stories to children here in Nigeria, Africa and around the world.

“The animation industry in Nigeria cuts across political, cultural, religious stories and other different stories our grandparents have told us, ’’ Solesi said.

She noted that in developed countries like China, animation was a sector that generated billions of dollars and urged more filmmakers to tap into it.

Solesi explained that at the moment in Nigeria there were no universities with animation in their curriculum but people could study graphics and arts as they were  similar.

She said that currently there were more men in the animation industry and urged more women to go into the space.

SMW is one of the world’s foremost conferences and industry news platform for marketers.
