New York City’s Broadway to remain dark through Labor Day

The Broadway League, a trade organization representing producers and theater owners, announced Tuesday that Broadway’s 41 theaters will remain closed through at least Sept. 6.
People holding tickets through Sept. 6 are advised to contact their point of purchase for refunds or exchanges. Broadway has been closed since March 12, and it’s unclear when theaters will resume operations.
Broadway is a highly lucrative entertainment industry in New York City. The week before theaters were shuttered due to Covid-19, ticket sales reached $26.7 million across plays and musical performances, according to Broadway World. In the last year, Broadway generated more than $1.75 billion in ticket sales.
Tourists account for 65% of Broadway’s annual ticket sales, according to the league.
During the 2018 to 2019 season, Broadway contributed $14.7 billion to the economy of the city, the organization wrote in an annual report.
